Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy explores the esophagus, the stomach and the duodenum by means of a gastroscope, which is a flexible instrument finished in a lens and a camera, which is introduced across the mouth, allowing to visualize all the upper gastrointestinal tract. In addition, biopsy samples can be taken, and several treatments, such as polypectomy, stent placement, dilation or bleeding therapy, among others can be performed. In our clinic, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is always performed with the patient sedated, monitored by a medical specialist, allowing to perform a neither annoying nor painful procedure.
An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is indicated when a doctor wants to rule out the presence of diseases at the esophagus, stomach or duodenum, as well as when biopsy samples for microbiological or patholoic analysis is needed.
